Faculty Friday; Meet Dr. Ravi Roy

Ravi-Roy.jpgFor Dr. Ravi Roy, teaching political science is a family business. His father taught the subject for over 50 years, instilling in him a love for American Government. Roy is an assistant professor of political science at Southern Utah University and serves as the W. Edwards Deming fellow in public affairs.

Roy received his Ph.D. in political science and public policy from Claremont Graduate University in California. He previously studied at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia and the University of California, Santa Barbara. In 2017 he will celebrate his fifth anniversary working at SUU.

Roy teaches the following classes in the Master of Public Administration Program:

  • PADM 6000 Program Overview and Theory of Public Administration (and online)
  • PADM 6750 Special Topics in Public Admin (online)
  • PADM 6830 Readings and Conferences
  • PADM 6990 Capstone in Public Admin

He has held a number of academic positions which include: Director of the Post-Graduate Program in International Development at RMIT University, Director of the MPA program at California State University, and Visiting Research Scholar at University of California.

Ravi-Roy2.jpg“I love to inspire and support students to reach their full potential,” said Roy. “The most rewarding part of my job is seeing what those students can do to change their own and other’s lives.”

Among other honors, he was awarded a certificate of recognition presented by his Excellency Suslio Bambang Yudhoyono, President of Indonesia (2004-2014), for participating in Indonesia Toward 2025. He has participated in and organized many roundtables, panels and workshops involving global studies and political science.

Roy brings his global and professional experience to the classroom to facilitate conversations for his students.

“Everyday's an adventure for me,” said Roy. “It’s not my job to tell my students what to think; it’s my job is to tell them what to think about.”

He was recently featured in a podcast from The W. Edwards Deming Institute about creating a Deming Incubator for Public Affairs at SUU.

Roy loves to travel. His favorite places to visit are Greece (especially since he is half Greek), London, and Australia. He loves playing practical jokes and doing famous and political impressions. However, more than anything, he loves the opportunity to mold America’s future leaders.
