Mary Pearson is an accounting guru and always has been. Teaching, however, was not always her passion. But she first became interested in teaching when she found she could balance it all: a career, her skills, and raising a family.
After receiving both her Bachelor of Science degree in accounting and her Graduate Masters of accounting from Southern Utah University, Pearson began teaching at the Community College of Southern Nevada. She soon realized that not only did teaching balance everything out, but that she loved being in the classroom, associating with students, and being a mentor.
From there, her family moved back to Cedar City where she was hoping to be able to continue teaching. It was because of her previous experience in Nevada that helped her begin teaching adjunct at SUU in 1999.
Since being offered a full time teaching position in 2005, Mary Pearson has had a positive impact on SUU’s School of Business. As Interim Associate Dean, Pearson has a passion for SUU and all that the school has to offer. Working at the university has been a positive experience and Pearson loves everything about the school. As an accounting professor, she teaches the following classes:
- ACCT 2010 Accounting Principles
- ACCT 2020 Managerial Accounting
- ACCT 3010 Financial Accounting I
“The students are definitely the best part of being a professor,” said Pearson. “Every semester I am rejuvenated and excited about the future as I know these amazing students will do great things.”
Along with her work as a professor, Pearson works as a certified public accountant (CPA).Her professional accounting career has allowed her to meet and associate with successful entrepreneurs, providing them with financial advice that will help them better meet their goals and objectives within their organizations. She enjoys how lucrative professional accounting is and how it has provided her and her family a lifestyle that they all enjoy.
Over the years, Pearson has received copious amounts of awards. Most recently, she has received Cedar City Educator of the Year in 2016, Southern Utah University Student Influencer in 2016, and Southern Utah University Outstanding Educator in 2013.
Pearson is currently in the process of completing her dissertation for her Ph.D. in Accounting from Northcentral University. Her expected completion date is December 2017.
