Working in the field of marketing requires both creative and analytical minds and combines skillsets from all areas of business. Southern Utah University has an AACSB-accredited marketing bachelor’s degree program designed to help students develop, implement, and control marketing strategies and tactics.
Tyler Cornia of South Jordan, Utah, recently graduated SUU with a marketing degree. As a student, he gained marketing experience outside of the classroom through summer sales jobs and as president of the SUU Student Association. With a degree under his belt, here are four reasons Cornia says being a marketing major is the right choice:
Projects simulate real-world jobs
Marketing classes are designed to bring education and experience together. Class projects directly reflect work after college and give students practice in their future careers. Marketing students can expect 3-4 projects per course.
Student opportunities on campus
There are plenty of opportunities for students to gain marketing experience on campus. Whether by serving in clubs or through part-time employment, marketing is an essential piece of every organizational puzzle. At SUU, clubs like PBL (Professional Business Leaders, Phi Beta Lambda) and DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America, Delta Epsilon Chi Association) offer a portfolio full of opportunities, also jobs are offered to students at the SUU Marketing Communication office.
“Throughout my four years at SUU, I was heavily involved with clubs, organizations, work, and athletics,” Cornia said. “It is possible to maintain balance by attending class during the day and socializing at night.”
Plenty of internships and career options
Internships give students a taste of how a career might look and feel. Completing more than one internship experience can showcase different areas of marketing that students can go into. While at SUU, consider interning at local companies, departments on campus, or at nearby National Park over the summer.
Gateway to many opportunities
Whether a shoe company or a dentist, marketing is necessary for getting the word out about products and services for organizations of every kind. Students majoring in marketing can choose from a variety of industry sectors that speak to their individual interests. Cornia also recommends considering post-graduate education for future career advancements.
“It can be difficult to get a high level marketing job with just a bachelor's degree,” said Cornia. “That being said, there are many different routes to take. The best bet is to work while getting a masters degree in anything from business administration to marketing.”
