Our SUU Summer

SUU and Cedar City had a very busy summer. From hiking to attending the theatre to finding local gems - Our SUU Summer was entertaining and exciting and sometimes exhausting. The only thing missing was you!

Here are 21 things that happened.

 

1. The student center underwent some pretty extensive renovations, including new paint, new floors and a clearstory.

 

2. With the finish line right in front of the Southern Utah Museum of Art (SUMA), the entire intersection turned into a community-wide celebration for the Tour of Utah with Mayor Maile Wilson and Thor in attendance. 

 

3. T-Birds flew around the world this summer, with 137 students studying abroad in 16 different countries

4. Internships and jobs took students to new professional heights.

 

5. The Beverley Center, the new arts complex housing SUMA and the Utah Shakespeare Festival, opened with a three-day celebration.

 

6. Antique cars and churros brought residents of Cedar City together to celebrate the July Jamboree.

7. SUMA officially opened, bringing world-class art to Cedar City and SUU.

8. The Library debuted a new exhibit explaining how Shakespeare has ties with the American West.

 

9. The weather was perfect for outdoor adventures and hiking.

 

10. Cows were loose on campus.

 

11. Maxing out at 101 degrees this summer, the Tiki Shack helped students escape the heat with a tasty treat.

 

12. SUU's Lynn Vartan released a signature marimba mallet set at the Heartland Marimba Festival.

 

13. SUU was named Utah's first Purple Heart Campus.

 

14. The Utah Shakespeare Festival performed in two new theatres - the Engelstad Shakespeare Theatre and the Anes Studio Theatre - both located in the Beverley Center.

 

15. Pokemon Go took over campus, filling fields with wandering screen-staring Poke trainers.

16. Residents ate out at local eateries, such as The Grind.

 

17. Larry H. Miller was announced as the new sponsor of the Utah Summer Games.

 

18. Bulloch Drug hosted a throwback sale on all their legendary mixed sodas.

 

19. The Greenshow provided free, family-friendly entertainment every day.

 

20. Spectacular night skies and meteor showers dazzled all of southern Utah.

21. Lords and ladys from afar attended the Renaissance Faire, where shops and larping were only a few of the many attractions.
