SUU On the Hill, President Scott L Wyatt.jpgThe 2018 session of the Utah State Legislature begins with opening ceremonies in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Part of the opening ceremonies includes an introduction of the interns. This year, Southern Utah Univerisity has one in the Senate, five in the House and one in the Governor's office. These students spent the last week at the Capitol undergoing an intensive training session with 89 other interns from colleges and universities throughout the state.

There are two weekly calendars that detail all the committee meetings times and locations. These become my most important calendars.

The first three weeks of the session prioritize appropriation committee meetings. Of greatest importance to us at SUU is the Higher Education Appropriations Committee. On Friday, President Wyatt will report to the committee to share some of our programs and initiatives that focus on student success and completion. During the third week, he will be asked to present again to make SUU's budget request for the new fiscal year. More on that later...

On Wednesday, President Wyatt and his wife Kathy will have a series of meetings with members of the Infrastructure and General Government Appropriations Subcommittee to let them know more about our Child and Familly Development Center.

Friday is Higher Ed Day. President Wyatt and our Board of Trustees have been invited to join the legislators for lunch for some one-on-one time to talk about the importance of supporting higher education and our Utah System of Higher Education priorities of access, timely completion, and workforce alignment.

I'll be posting more frequently on Facebook this week as representatives from our community will be here. Cedar City and Iron County officials will be in town Monday for Tourism Day and Wednesday for Local Officials Day. Always nice to see familiar faces!
