We have just hit the halfway mark for the 2019 legislative session! It’s been a crazy and busy adventure but also very rewarding. I’m so excited to see what the next half brings.
One of the best parts about serving as an intern is getting to network with a variety of people. There are people from all across the state representing hundreds of different organizations and interest groups. These people are always looking to build connections with others on the hill, which makes for a very fun and social atmosphere. On any given day, I am meeting 10-15 new people who are able to offer advice, friendship, and even future employment opportunities.
Oftentimes, the legislative interns work side by side with their legislators which allows them to network with a wide variety of people from other legislators to university presidents and lobbyists. However, intern to intern interaction is lowered especially as time goes on, so to help our students to continue networking and connecting with each other, we have been conducting an occasional Pizza and Politics event on the hill.
Pizza and Politics is an event that originated in SUU's Michael O. Leavitt Center for Politics and Public Service. This weekly event allows students to learn about and discuss important political issues from federal legislation to on-campus student elections. While on the hill, our interns have a much closer relationship with state legislation which makes for a very informed and interesting discussion.
During our event last week, we invited the SUU interns and opened the discussion up to include issues being covered on the hill as well as important learning experiences that each intern has recognized. Some of the topics that our interns were able to talk about were the importance of relationship building, funny experiences with their legislators, controversial bills and legislation, and SUU’s projects for the session. We had a fun time together and look forward to joining up for our next event!
