7 Reasons Why You Should Major in Computer Science and Information Systems

computer-science-major-blog.jpgThe Department of Computer Science and Information Systems (CSIS) provides rigorous accredited (ABET) programs that enable students to pursue graduate studies and/or careers in computer science and information systems. Graduates are in demand by companies both local and nationwide.

Faculty are dedicated to the success of students in and outside of the classroom, and have expertise in various areas of computer science and information systems. Curriculum is founded on providing students with engaged and experiential education, as well as opportunities to participate in undergraduate research.

Seven reasons why you should major in computer science and information systems.

  1. ABET accredited program. Less than 3% of all universities and colleges in the world are ABET accredited, meaning the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc. has evaluated the program curriculum and deemed it sufficient to produce quality industry professionals in STEM fields. SUU’s Computer Science & Information department and Engineering & Technology department are both ABET accredited, educating students in up-to-date professional standards.

  2. Specialized labs. The CSIS department has state-of-the-art Linux, networking and forensics computer labs to provide students the hands-on training necessary to excel in the job market.

  3. Relevant on-campus employment. According to Taylor Cella, information systems major at SUU, the IT department hires new Help Desk technicians every semester to fill vacancies. “Keep an eye out,” said Cella. “It’s the best job on campus!”

  4. Small class sizes. SUU has an 18:1 student to faculty ratio, which the CSIS department exemplifies. Students have full access to their professors for extracurricular research, additional help in class or professional development advice.

  6. Easy transition to graduate school. SUU’s Master of Cyber Security & Information Assurance program trains students on the design and management of systems tasked with defending networks from cyber terrorism. Undergraduate students can easily apply and transition from the CSIS bachelor’s program to the CSIA master’s program.

  7. High employment demand. “CSIS can take you down several different career paths,” said Cella. “You could work in IT as a technician or a systems administrator or as a developer or programmer. Every industry needs computer science workers, so the possibilities are endless for where you could end up.”

Computers have become an integral part of everyday life, used for a variety of reasons at home, in the workplace, and at schools. This explosion of technology usage has created a high demand for specialists, which is exactly what SUU’s CSIS program trains students to do.
