Presidential candidate Evan McMullin, along with his running mate Mindy Finn, visited Southern Utah University on Thursday, November 3rd. The event was hosted by the Michael O. Leavitt Center for Politics and Public Service, which is a non-partisan center that works to disseminate political information to students, faculty, and the community.
Over 300 audience members attended the morning presentation. McMullin and Finn discussed their backgrounds, policy reforms, and ideas for the future. The conversation ended with a lively Q&A session from the audience.
Finn covered why she was in the race for the White House. She noted that she did not side with Hillary Clinton’s policies, nor did she think Clinton was fit for the position. Finn also disagrees with Republican nominee, Donald Trump. Expressing her concern about Trump’s inappropriate statements and actions toward women and minorities. Without a good option on either side, Finn decided to step up with McMullin and give the American people a third option for President.
McMullin began his conversation by speaking about the current leadership in this country. He feels there is a lack of courageous, strong individuals which is why he is standing up for his beliefs in liberty and freedom. He is amazed by his fellow Republicans supporting Trump and questions their integrity. McMullin stated that he thinks standing up for the country is worth potentially burning bridges and losing a seat in Trump’s potential cabinet.
McMullin also reinforced why he is running and what he wants to change if he wins. He would focus on education, national defense, and the role of the federal government vs. state rights.
Finn was born and raised outside of Houston, Texas. She received her Bachelor’s degree from Boston University and a Master's from George Washington University. Finn has worked as the founder and president of Empowered Women, as well as a key player on both President George W. Bush’s and Mitt Romney’s staff.
McMullin was born in Provo, Utah and earned his Bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University and his Master’s from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. His professional career has included being a CIA operative, an investment banker, and the chief policy director of the House Republican Conference. McMullin declared his candidacy for President on August 8th, 2016.
