Solutions for Higher Education engages in deeper reflection of critical issues in the world of colleges and universities.
In Episode 2, President Scott L. Wyatt and Professor Steve Meredith talk about whether or not it is permissible to curtail the right to free speech on college and university campuses.
President Wyatt states that all university faculty members work for the government, and the government has to support freedom of speech. According to the Supreme Court, even hate speech is a protected constitutional speech. And when they take away free speech, we are all moving toward a more totalitarian government.
Universities have an opportunity to not censor speech, but to make people more comfortable by inviting all beliefs on campus, and helping students process these ideas instead of being offended.
According to Wyatt, students need to be confronted by ideas they disagree with and learn to work through them intellectually, not violently.
