Solutions for Higher Education engages in deeper reflection of critical issues in the world of colleges and universities.
In Episode 4, President Scott L Wyatt and Professor Steve Meredith discuss the place for athletic programs in higher education.
Part of Wyatt's role as a university president is to sit on the governing board of Southern Utah University's Division 1 athletic conference. The NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) strategic plan is currently under revision, and in Wyatt's opinion, should be updated to match those of the universities they serve. Aligning athletic and academic goals more closely would provide an integrated student experience, expose students to other cultures and prepare them to engage in a global economy.
According to Wyatt, athletic programs are the "front porch of the university", inviting people inside the house. And being inside the house opens students to a wealth of opportunities of learning. SUU athletic teams are spokespersons for the university. Athletes visit elementary schools and engage with young students, inspiring them to go to college.
There is a real opportunity for college athletics, specifically the NCAA, to strengthen communities and make a significant impact on today's youth.
