The Festival of Excellence

By Southern Utah University on April 02, 2018

IMG_0317Every Spring SUU closes down campus and hosts the Festival of Excellence.  The Festival of Excellence is a day to celebrate the scholarly efforts through interdisciplinary dialogue to encourage lifelong learning. This celebration of research and exploration allows students, faculty, and staff to share their works with the surrounding community. The day is full of opportunities to learn about the different fields of studies. There are presentations on leadership experience, scientific research, and artistic endeavors. With so many exhibits of excellence going on in one day, it may be overwhelming.

“The Festival of Excellence is important because it allows scholars faculty and students to collaborate with other from a wide variety of fields and then taking those ideas to their own fields.” -Scott Knowles, Director of the Festival of Excellence

Here are a few ways to make the most out of the Festival of Excellence:

  1. Make A Plan: There are over 300 different presentations on the Festival of Excellence so it is essential that you look over the schedule of the day to determine which presentations you want to go to and which ones your friends are in so you can go and support them. There are many different types of presentations to choose from such as Global Engagement, Creative Expression & Analysis, Scholarship of Teaching, and many more.
  1. Take Notes: The whole day is an opportunity for you to learn and understand different areas of study. It will help to bring a notebook or laptop to write down notes and collect more information. You will have a place to refer to your notes later in your college experience.
  1. Ask Questions: After the central portion of the presentation is completed, there will be an opportunity to ask questions to the presenter. Use this time to seek clarification on their topic, and sometimes your questions might inspire the research to look deeper into their findings and continue their investigation. Asking questions will also create a productive dialogue for the whole room where everyone can learn about the respective topic.
  1. Be A Presenter: If you have been working on a project, research, or performance, you should submit to present at the Festival. It is a great way to showcase your hard work and a good stepping stone in sharing your ideas with the world. You also have the opportunity to have your work to receive the “Distinguished Student Project” Award. Applications for the Festival of Excellence usually go out at the start of January, and that will give you time to turn in a quality application.

The Festival of Excellence occurs each April, so talk with your professors today about submitting a project to present! Visit the Festival of Excellence website for more information.
